NFL FAQ Week 3: What’s up with Griffin III?
Jordan Heath-Rawlings
September 20, 2013, 4:27 PM
ugg Just when you think you have the answers, the NFL changes the questions-and we’ll try to stay one step ahead of league’s carousel by answering the queries on Friday that you’ll be pondering Sunday morning.
uggs outlet sale Q: What the heck is wrong with Robert Griffin III?
uggs outlet sale A: Well, he’s not Adrian Peterson, so has not somehow managed to return just a few months after knee surgery in the best shape of his career. He’s still working towards full strength and-naturally-he’s nervous. When your franchise quarterback-who took the NFL by storm last September because he loved to run-is saying things like, “It’s not that I want to run more, I just feel like that’s what we need…” it’s a sign he feels uncomfortable. Now that he seems apprehensive about taking off with the football, the last thing the coaching staff should do is panic and push him to carry them back towards .500-especially this week against a Lions pass rush that delights in attempting to destroy opposing quarterbacks. There’s nothing wrong with RGIII that letting him return to his own game in his own time won’t fix. The question is if the Redskins will have the patience to do that.
uggs outlet store Q: The Chargers look OK so far? Really?!
uggs outlet sale A: No. Not really. Philip Rivers and company caught the Texans by surprise in week one, racing out to a 28-7 lead before Houston stormed back to win, then barely beat an Eagles team that had a lot of offensive hype but not much actual defensive acumen. The 28 points they hung on the Texans became a little more questionable when Houston ended up in a shootout with the Titans last week, and the Chiefs showed Thursday night how many problems are hiding just out of focus in Chip Kelly’s blur offence. If the suspect nature of their opponents doesn’t seal it for you, they might well be facing Tennessee without right tackle D.J. Fluker, a key piece of the Chargers revamped offensive line, who suffered a concussion in practice Wednesday. If Fluker sits, Rivers still throws for 300 yards and Eddie Royal catches another couple of touchdowns, then we’ll have to explain in this space next week why they are still not for real.
uggs clearance Q: Just how badly will the Seahawks beat the Jaguars?
A: Not quite as badly as it was first assumed, if the betting trends are to be believed, but most likely still very, very badly. In some sports books, the Hawks-Jags game opened as just the 11th 20-point spread in the history of NFL wagering, but it’s now down to “just” 19.5 or even 19 in some places-meaning there are people out there considering a bet on the team who beat the San Francisco 49ers by 26 points last week and think, “you know, I just don’t think they can do the same thing to Jacksonville.” Which seems, you know, insane.
Q: Is Tom Brady in trouble?
A: Yeah, you wish, bro. We all kind of wish, because life is more interesting when all-time greats are playing for their lives, but…
Q: His receivers can’t catch! The running game has looked awful! I am afraid he might strangle Kenbrell Thompkins on television if he breaks the wrong way on another third-down out route. They barely beat the JETS! How can you say he’s not in trouble?
A: Easily, watch: The Patriots are 2-0. They do not play in a particularly tough division. They have an intelligent coach and one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. And none of these things are even the main reason the Patriots will be fine. The main reason is, in fact, that those very receivers that Tom Brady wants to strangle right now will soon become, if not his BFFs, then at least his good chums. Yes, week two drops by Thompkins and Aaron Dobson were the reason the Pats only just edged the woeful Jets-but those are two rookie receivers. Big, strong, fast rookie receivers. They got nervous. They screwed up. But they got open-repeatedly. It’s far more likely that Dobson and Thompkins will settle into their roles and benefit from the extra attention a healthy Rob Gronkowski will draw than it is that they’ll both flame out completely. When that happens, Brady will have the NFL’s best red zone tight end, an adequate replacement for Wes Welker in Julian Edelman and two raw downfield talents who will be seeing single coverage on every snap. So no, he’s not in trouble. Sorry. Now go buy some Uggs.
Q: Chuck Pagano says Trent Richardson will play against the 49ers. Why?
A: Why did he say that? Presumably because he’d rather Jim Harbaugh spends a little bit of time watching film of the Cleveland Browns than of more film of his Colts. That’s not to say that Richardson won’t play at all — but it would be surprising if he was heavily involved in an offence he’s had four days to learn against one of the better front sevens in the NFL (by reputation, at least, it’s worth pointing out that after two weeks the 49ers sit 23rd in the NFL against the run). Wrong assignments and poorly read blocks are how newly acquired franchise running backs end up injured. Don’t expect more than 10-12 touches, and those should be in predictable situations.
Q: I’m a Browns fan. Do you have any straws for me to grasp? Alternatively, can you recommend a drinkable whiskey available cheap?
A: Yes-Elijah Craig is a nice, warm Sunday afternoon bourbon that can usually be found for less than $30 a bottle. For true diehard Browns fans, we recommend the 12-year, which is a little pricier but has higher alcohol content. If you are desperate for something to look forward to on the football field, well, Josh Gordon returns from suspension and now has former Patriots backup Brian Hoyer throwing the ball to…no, that’s depressing. Sorry. One more try: New starting running back (Unless they give the job to almost-32-year-old Willis McGahee!) Bobby Rainey is a speedy, shifty runner who can turn screen passes into open-field gains and led the nation in carries in 2011 while at Western Kentucky, finishing fifth with 1,695 rushing yards-a full 16 yards more than some guy named Trent (whom we won’t speak of again) who was toting the rock for Alabama at the time. You can watch his first official NFL carry. You can also console yourself with the knowledge that a back like Richardson is probably the least necessary component of a Super Bowl champion.
Q: The Dolphins are 2-0 somehow. But the Falcons come to Sun Life Stadium Sunday and will bring them back to reality…right?
A: No. The Dolphins might seem like a mirage, but the underlying structure is sound. They won in week one while getting absolutely nothing from their running game or wideout Mike Wallace, their big-money free agent acquisition. They won in week two by stuffing Andrew Luck and the Colts in the fourth quarter. The Falcons, meanwhile, have been decimated by injuries. Running back Steven Jackson is out, and the linebacker corps is so banged up Atlanta was reduced to signing not one but two free agents off the street, Jamar Chaney and Omar Gaither. Fins running back Lamar Miller got over his week one jitters in Indianapolis by averaging 4.9 yards per carry-and he’ll get to run through a battered front. If Brent Grimes can provide even a hint of competent coverage on Julio Jones, the Falcons will have to hope a hobbled Roddy White and Jackson’s backups — Jacquizz Rodgers and Jason Snelling — can get something going against a stout Dolphins front seven.
