CHESHIRE — Wrapped in blankets and holding steaming cups of coffee, supporters for the Cheshire Rams and Southington Blue Knights came out in force on a cold, windy Thanksgiving Day to cheer on the teams in the annual Apple Classic.
The game started at 10 a.m. at the Cheshire High School field, with bell ringing and shouts emanating from the crowd. Walking in, spectators were greeted by the Cheshire Youth Cheerleading team. The squad of 87 girls is headed to nationals in Florida on Dec. 14. The girls are raising money to help pay for the trip down, said the effort’s coordinator, Monica Oris.
On the Blue Knights side of the field, bells were being rung and one fan had a giant cutout of one of the football player’s heads. Lori Grim was there to cheer on her son Vance Uphan, a freshman running back and middle linebacker. Uphan’s girlfriend, Ashley Braiselle, is a sophomore varsity cheerleader.
“It’s so exciting, I am elated,” Grim said about seeing her son on the field. “It’s one of the best feelings.”
Grim said after the game, she and her son will be going to Braiselle’s house for Thanksgiving dinner.
As the first quarter got underway, children were playing their own mini-football games on the sides of the fences and in an open field behind the football field.
Steven Canada’s son, Steven Canada Jr., is a senior at Cheshire High School and plays snare drum in the marching band. Canada Sr. said this is the family’s ninth and final year with a child in the band, having had older children also play. Canada Sr. said the game is the typical big rivalry between Cheshire and Southington. After the game, Canada Sr. said they are going to his wife’s parents house to “eat too much food and watch too much football.” He said that they will not be shopping on the holiday.
